"I don't want to be different"

Image
Last night Skip put the girls to bed.  Once Charlie was asleep, he spent a little time with Emmy.    He read her another story and they told jokes, as is their routine when Skip's actually home for bedtime.  He was just about to leave when she started crying.  Apparently she was crying about her peanut allergy.  She told Skip that she doesn't want to be different any more.  She asked why she can't be normal like everyone else.   Break my heart! Skip managed to calm her down and she woke up this morning without another thought about it.  As kids do, she bounced back quickly.  But still, my heart hurts for my sweet girl. We try to make Emmy's life as 'normal' as possible, despite her allergy. Yes, she knows the seriousness of it and that she cannot ever have any peanuts.  She always makes sure to ask if something has peanuts in it.  She checks to make sure we have her epi-pen every time we leave the house.  But we don't let ...

Waves the White Flag

Image
I know today is day 3 of the Thirty Things and I should be blogging about my relationship with my parents {which is awesome by the way}But today I just can't.  Because today I am waving the white flag.  This whole grown-up thing?  Yeah I'm over it.  It's been a long week to begin with.  Emmy still on her antibiotic, Charlie has barely been sleeping since she caught our cold/cough, and I've been sleeping even less because I've been taking care of babies and I have my own terrible cough to deal with. And then yesterday, right after Skip left to work a sixteen hour shift, this happened. Out of no where this massive branch came tumbling down.  Thank God though no one was outside and it missed our shed and the girls playhouse!  Still annoying to deal with since I now have to go outside with the dogs when they go out to make sure they don't hang out under the totally unstable branch still hanging on, waiting to crush them.  And every time I look at the ...

Bye Bye Peanuts

After this incident, Skip and I made an appointment to take Little M to the allergist.  Today was her appointment, and let me tell you, it was also one of my toughest days as a mom.  After filling out ten pages if medical information at home, we headed in to our 11:00 appointment.  They quickly ushered us into the back and we met with the doctor.  We went over the story of Little M's exposure to the peanut butter and the doctor checked her over quickly.  {side note...Little M *hates* the doctor and screams during the entire exam every.single.time we go to the doctor.  So I knew today wasn't going to be pleasant for her or I} Next we went into the testing room.  The nurse explained that they would prick her back with several small needles containing traces of different possible food allergy triggers and then we had to keep Little M on her  stomach for 20 minutes {was she kidding?!?!?!?!}  We took Little M's shirt off {she had already started ...

And the Allergies Begin

Image
This is a staple in our household. Skip and I are huge fans of peanut butter. My favorite way to eat it is by dipping a huge chunk of chocolate into it...heaven. And we use this brand in particular because, well, my husband's nickname is Skip! Anyways, like I said we eat a lot of peanut butter around here. Well, there is one person in our house who will not be eating peanut butter again...this little girl We were giving Little M some lunch today and she was being very fussy and picky. So we decided to try some of these delicious peanut butter crackers Little M gobbled one down, but then just crumpled up the second, so we didn't give her any more. We cleaned her up and Skip took her upstairs to change her diaper. When he brought her back downstairs I noticed she kept rubbing her eyes and her face was getting all blotchy. Then her eyes starting watering and swelling up. 'Oh no,' I said, 'it's the peanut butter!' We quickly called the doctor and then c...
