Halloween

Nothing like posting a Halloween update just before Thanksgiving.  Whoops!  Trying to get all caught up here. We had a few Halloween events this year.  Yes, sometimes I feel like holidays are getting a little out of control.  But my girls being able to wear their costumes a few times instead of just once is totally worth it! First up we attended our very first Trunk or Treat.  It was at our girls' school the weekend before Halloween.  Now honestly, things have been so crazy, that we didn't really plan a whole big theme or anything.  The girls wore their princess/cowgirl costumes...Skip and I dressed like Giants players....and the car we just bought a bunch of Halloween things at the Dollar Store.  But we all had a fabulous time! Then Emmy got to dress up for a girl scout meeting and her dance class.  Charlie got to dress up at school the Friday before Halloween. We also carved and decorated our pumpkins the night before! {squirrels will eat t...

The Teal Pumpkin

Image
A few weeks before Halloween, I started to see some people talking about the Teal Pumpkin Project.  I did a little research and found out that it is for Food Allergy Awareness.  The gist of it is, you are supposed to paint a pumpkin teal, and then off both candy and non-food items to kids with allergies on Halloween.  Well I could absolutely get on board with that! Halloween is probably the most stressful holiday for a food allergy parent, so I was happy to do anything I could to help. First off, all the candy I bought to give out was peanut and nut free.  I put that on the sign I left when we were out.  I also had some gummy candy that was chocolate and dairy free as well.  I painted our pumpkin teal that morning, and wrote on it that we were an allergy friendly house.  I had picked up some small toys at the store and placed them in a bowl to hand out with a sign that said they were for kids with allergies. We were not really home most of the afternoo...

Halloween Recap

I'd have to say that this past Friday was my favorite Halloween ever.  For one, there was no hurricanes, blizzards, or power outages.  That along makes it a good holiday around these parts.  As the girls get older, they understand the holidays more and their excitement was absolutely contagious.  They had been talking about Halloween for weeks and could not wait  to go trick-or-treating! Skip took Friday off as it is one of the only holidays he can actually take off.  I was a little sad Emmy's school didn't let them dress up, but she was okay with it.  As soon as she got home, we dressed them both in their costumes and headed out! We have a great little neighborhood for trick-or-treating and the girls had an absolute blast.  As they're older now, they could go up to the houses themselves while Skip and I waited on the sidewalk...amazing! We were out until almost 5, then came home for dinner.  After we'd eaten we headed out again to visit my l...

Fall Things

Image
Our little family got to participate in some fun fall activities the past few days.  On Saturday our town held it's annual Ragamuffin parade.  All the little kids dress up in their Halloween costumes and we go parading down the main street.  It is as cute as it sounds. Yesterday we finally decided it was time to get pumpkins to carve before Thanksgiving.  We've been to a few farms this season, but had yet to grab any pumpkins.  The squirrels in our neighborhood are vicious {as is the groundhog who's eaten almost all our mum flowers} and so we wanted to wait as long as possible before we got them. It actually worked out perfectly as we basically had the farm to ourselves!  Guess no one procrastinates like us.  We got to see the animals, walk through the hay maze, and have our pick of the pumpkins. I can't wait to carve them together sometime this week. I may not like the fall and the cooler weather it brings, but I do love these fun family activities to...

Best Halloween Eveer

Yesterday was a good day around here...a really good day.  In fact, I think it's safe to say that it was the best Halloween we've had since we had kids.  Here's a little rundown of the past few years: 2009 - Emmy's first Halloween.  She was a bear and the cutest thing ever.  But Skip had to work and miss the whole thing 2010 - Emmy was an adorable lady bug.  Skip was home and we took her trick or treating for the first time.  However, I was new pregnant with Charlie and puking everywhere.  2011 - Charlie's first Halloween.  We got hit by Frankenstorm...Snowpacalypse...whatever you want to call it.  Lots of snow in October = down power lines and branches and no power for days.  We did trick or treat a little though. 2012 - The year Halloween was cancelled.  We were knee deep in hurricane Sandy when October 31st rolled around.  We did dress them up one day, later on, and trick or treat at my parents house.  That was the exte...
