Fitness Friday

Image
It's been a long time since I popped in here for a Fitness Friday!  I have still been working out consistently, though this month was a little challenging.  I have to take a few days off here and there because of a sprained ankle, pinched nerve in my neck, and the bruised ribs.  BUT even with those obstacles I still managed to run 80 miles and FINALLY beat my friend in a challenge....wahoo!! Here's a look at the breakdown for the month. I'm still lagging behind if I want to get to 1000 miles in 2015, so now that's it's warmer, I've got to start stepping up my game a little more.  Hopefully my injuries clear up soon and I'm able to really push it.  I'd like to add in more strength training as well, especially with summer just around the corner! What have your workouts been looking like these days?

Favorite Workout Gear

It's no secret that I love to work out.  I've been doing it consistently for about 16 years now, so I better like it!  Now, I'm no expert, but I thought I'd share some of my favorite workouts, clothes, and apps with you.  {This isn't sponsored and I'm not using any affiliate links...I just wanted to share what's worked for me.  Click right on the pictures to see where I got the pictures and where you can buy them} Clothes Nothing can derail a workout like ill-fitting clothes, or ones that ride up.  Sure, you can workout in any t-shirt and shorts, but I've found that specialized athletic clothes are much better for most activities.  Many people swear by Lululemon, but I've never tried them as they're out of my price range.  Here are some of the things I've found luck with. Old Navy has some great compression capris and tops.  They're comfortable and don't ride up!  I always check out they're clearance section and have been able to ...

Am I the only one who goes through a workout funk? Don't forget to come link up!!

Welcome to another week of workout Wednesdays!  I hope some of you are inspired to link up this week! Here is what I have been up to the past week: Wednesday October 1: 5 mile run Thursday: none Friday: 45 minute walk {I didn't track the mileage} Saturday: 6.5 mile run Sunday: Shred level 1 Monday: none Tuesday: 1 week Shred {weights section} Weekly miles - 11.5 Weekly total workouts: 5 I struggled a bit with working out as you can see.  I hurt my knee last Wednesday, so it was good to take a little time off.  I'm glad I worked out most days, but I definitely didn't push myself as hard as I have been.  Skip has been working some strange hours and while I have been good in the past about finding time to for me to workout, I got pretty lazy with it this week.  I'm hoping to really kick it back up a notch this week! What helps you when you struggle for workout motivation? Don't forget to come link up!!

My First Race!

Image
I have considered myself a runner for about a year and a half now, in that running is my main source of exercise.  I have done long runs and short runs....fast ones and slow...and pretty much everything in between.  But the one thing I had yet to try as a runner is racing.  Which seems strange, because it seems like that is one of the first things people start doing once they beginning running. I never got into racing for a few reasons: -Skip is hardly ever off on a weekend....without child care, I can't run the races. -When it comes to working out, I have always been very self-motivated, so I never needed a race on the calender to inspire me to work out...I was going to do it anyway. -Between the two girls and Skip's insane schedule, time to work out for me can often be limited and must be flexible.  I could either step out my door and run 3 miles in half an hour or less, or I could drive to a race..check in...stretch...wait for the start...run 3 miles...walk around...

Workout Wedesday....Link Up!!

Image
So I mentioned something in passing about this earlier in the month and today I decided to just go for it and launch a Workout Wednesday link-up!!  Anyone with Nike+ or Run Keeper knows what a motivator it is to see what kind of workouts your friends are doing during the week.  If I see someone passing me on miles, or working out an extra day, it motivates me to push myself harder.  There also have been times that I've seen someone in really good shape and wondered what they do to look like that.  And that is what I'm hoping to do with this link up.  I want this place to be a weekly motivator and a place for all of us to share our favorite workouts! Monday September 1 - none Sept. 2 - 4.3 mile run Sept. 3 - 2.2 mile run Sept. 4 - 5.5 mile run Sept. 5 - none Sept. 6 - 1 week Shred {weights portion} Sept. 7 - 8 mile run / 1.5 mile walk Sept. 8 - 5.1 mile run Sept. 9 1.3 mile jog / 1 week Shred {weights portion} Weekly Mileage - 27.9 Number of Workouts -7 I have al...

100

I had no intentions of making this my highest mileage month ever, but after my friend had challenged me, I continued pushing myself with longer runs.  The closer I got to the end of August, the more I realized I wanted to hit that 100 mile mark for the month.  I have never done that in all the months I've been counting mileage.  I was also really happy with the fact that it was all running...normally I also do the elliptical, bike, etc at some point.  But this was a full month of all running outside, and I loved it! I really didn't think I was going to finish yesterdays run.  It was 90*, close to 100% humidity, and really dark storm clouds as I headed out.  But I took it slow and hoped for the best.  I end up running the last two miles in the rain, but I finished with my best 10k time, so it was all worth it.  Sometimes you just have to push through. This month taught me that my body is capable of more than I thought it was.  It also taught m...

Mind over Matter

Image
If there's one thing I've learned about working out, especially running, it's that it is 90% percent mental. Our bodies are way more capable than we think they are.  I can't tell you how many times I didn't want to work out, or didn't feel well enough to, but manage to get it done anyway.  It really is amazing what you can accomplish once you set your mind to something. As I mentioned before, a friend of mine challenge me on Nike+ to run 50 miles in two weeks.  I thought he was crazy at first...there was no way I could get that done.  But I'm not one to back down from a fight, so not only was I going to do it, I was determined to win.  I kept a pretty strong lead for most of the race, but had fallen behind on Wednesday.  I was going to have to do a pretty epic run to catch up.  I didn't sleep well Tuesday night.  We were down the shore at my parent's house and the girls woke up a few times.  We spent the morning at the beach, then home for a ...

July Workouts

I'm not sure that Manda is hosting the 30 Miles in 30 Days link-up anymore, but I still like to post my workouts on here.  One, they help keep me accountable and push a little bit harder than I would otherwise.  I also really love reading when other people post their workouts.  It gives me ideas of what other people do, and I'll sometimes incorporate other things into my workouts I got from them.  So here's what I did in July. Week One July 1 - 2.4 mile run July 2 - Jillian Michael's One Week Shred {cardio portion} July 3 - One Week Shred {weights} July 4 - One Week Shred {cardio} July 5 - none July 6 - Ripped in 30 July 7 - none Total = 2.4 miles / 5 workouts Week Two July 8 -2 mile run July 9 - 3 mile run July 10 - 2.3 mile run July 11 - Ripped in 30 July 12 - 3.6 mile walk July 13 - none July 14 - 11 mile bike Total = 21.9 miles / 6 workouts Week Three July 15 - 3 mile elliptical July 16 - 3.7 mile run July 17 - 2.3 mile run July 18 - none July 19 - 3 mile run / a...

May / June Miles

Image
Time to close out May and kick off June!! Thursday May 29 - Ripped in 30 Friday - 2.5 mile run Saturday - none May Total Miles - 70.1 May Total Workouts - 26 I'm not gonna lie, I am pretty proud of myself for May.  Out of the 70 total miles, 60 of them were running exclusively.  Not too bad!  I am definitely loving that I'm increasing my mileage. Sunday June 1- 5.8 mile run / 1.5 mile walk Monday - 2.4 mile walk Tuesday -  1.5 mile walk Wednesday - 4 mile run Weekly total miles - 15.2 June total miles - 15.2 June workouts - 4 Wahoo!  See that 5.8 right there on Sunday?  Pretty proud of that one.  It was a struggle and I ran it pretty slow, but I'm happy I've been able to go a little further now. I probably won't be linking up until the end of June on here.  We've been getting ready for our big trip to Florida, so I've been trying to sneak in workouts when I can, but not stressing it.  My goal is to run twice while we're away......

May Miles

Image
We're winding down May already, can you believe it?!?  Here's my workouts for the past week. Thursday May 22 - 2.7 mile run Friday - 2.3 mile run Saturday - 4 mile run Sunday - 3.2 mile run Monday - 1 mile walk / arms and ab workout Tuesday -  3.1 mile run Wednesday - 2 mile elliptical / 5 mile bike Weekly Total - 23.3 miles May Total Miles - 67.6 May workout total - 24 I've been really pleased with my workouts this week!  I had Charlie in the jogging stroller for my first two runs.  She still sits in the stroller nicely, but is starting to get annoyed if I go out for too long.  So I've been saving my longer runs for when Skip can watch the girls.  I'm super proud of the miles this month, especially since most of them are just running!  Happy to be on track to hit 70 this month!

May Miles

Thursday May 15 - 3.1 mile run Friday - none Saturday - 5.1 mile run Sunday - 2.5 mile run Monday - 3.2 mile run Tuesday -  4 mile run Wednesday - none Weekly Total - 17.9 miles May Total Miles - 44.3 May workout total - 17 I'm happy that I was able to really focus on, and step up my running this week.  That's also why I made sure to take two rest days this week.  I've been doing really well with it and I want to make sure an injury doesn't sideline me.  I also know I need to focus on cross-training a little more this week. How have your miles been?  What are you plans to keep up with workouts over this holiday weekend?

May Miles

Image
I promised to step it up a bit in May..let's see how I did! Thursday May 8 - none Friday - 2.1 elliptical Saturday - 3.2 mile run Sunday - 2.7 mile run Monday - Supreme 90 total body Tuesday -  4.1 mile run Wednesday - 3.4 mile run Weekly Total - 15.5 miles May Total Miles - 26.4 May workout total - 12 I really tried to focus on listening to my body, and yet pushing it a little bit at the same time.  My lower back and knee have been hurting, so I've been taking things a little slower, and not quite as far as I'd like sometimes.  However, I'm also not using a little soreness as an excuse to just lay around and do nothing.  Yes, we want to make sure we don't really injure ourselves badly.  At the same time, you'll never make progress if you take a break every time something feels uncomfortable.

Goal Achieved
