Washington DC - Day 4 {Anniversary Day!}

Image
Thursday was our last full day in DC and our anniversary!  We started off the morning at Arlington {what, you don't like to sob uncontrollably on your anniversary?} Words cannot describe what a somber, beautiful place it is.  We saw the eternal flame where all the Kennedy's are buried and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.  We waited to watch the changing of the guard, and it was so worth it. After that, we went over to section 60 and visited the graves of two guys we knew. It was a morning I will never forget. From Arlington we drove to the Marine Corps Memorial.  I couldn't believe how enormous it was! The rain started to fall just as we were leaving, so we headed back to the hotel and ordered room service for lunch. Once we were done, we headed back out into the city.  We couldn't leave without seeing the White House!  We had applied months ago for a White House tour, but sadly were turned down.  We made sure to stop in the White House Visitor Center....

Washington DC - Day 3

After our whirlwind day on Monday, we decided to take things a little slower on Tuesday. We started off with a tour of the Capital.  We had set it up through our Congressman's office a few months ago.  Because Skip is a veteran, we were able to take a private tour.  Not only did we get to see the underground subways that the Congressmen take when they have to make it in time to vote, but we also got to see John Kerry!  I'm not a fan of his, but it was pretty cool that he was arm's distance away from me. Sadly, a lot of the Capital was closed off because of all the construction they're doing.  But we still enjoyed the experience. We even got to go see the floor of the House of Representatives.  I was excited because they were voting that day, but sadly they broke for lunch just before we got in there.  Maybe next time! We took pictures outside when the tour was done, and in front of the Supreme Court and Library of Congress. We met up with a friend afte...

Washington DC - Day 2 - Part 1

We did and saw so many things on Monday of our trip, I've had to split it up into two posts.  I've heard from several people how clean and easy the Metro is to navigate, but Skip and I decided we preferred to walk.  And walk we did!  We logged over 15 miles that first full day! We kicked off the morning with the American History museum {all the Smithsonian Museums are free, and line both sides of The Mall} This was by far my favorite museum that we saw all week.  The huge military section was my favorite!  I honestly could have spent hours in there. Part of the Berlin Wall A piece of the Twin Towers The section on the current war was strange for me.  It's weird to be in a museum and see artifacts I currently have in my basement Medals of Honor First Lady dresses! Skip as President The hat Lincoln was wearing the night he died Afterwards we popped into the Natural History Museum.  We honestly were only in there long enough to see the Hope Diamond and a ...
