Washington DC - Day 2 - Part 1

We did and saw so many things on Monday of our trip, I've had to split it up into two posts.  I've heard from several people how clean and easy the Metro is to navigate, but Skip and I decided we preferred to walk.  And walk we did!  We logged over 15 miles that first full day!

We kicked off the morning with the American History museum {all the Smithsonian Museums are free, and line both sides of The Mall} This was by far my favorite museum that we saw all week.  The huge military section was my favorite!  I honestly could have spent hours in there.

A piece of the Twin Towers

The section on the current war was strange for me.  It's weird to be in a museum and see artifacts I currently have in my basement

The hat Lincoln was wearing the night he died

Afterwards we popped into the Natural History Museum.  We honestly were only in there long enough to see the Hope Diamond and a few of the animals.  The one in New York City is far superior, so I didn't want to spend too much time in there.

Once we finished in there, we hiked over to Ford's Theater and the house across the street where Lincoln died, the Petersen House.

From there we ate lunch in a little place called Lincoln's Waffles.  It served breakfast all day and was absolutely fantastic.  We tried to spend as little time eating as possible, as to not slow down the time spent in museums.

After we ate, we checked out the Crime and Punishment Museum..it was the one museum we went to that wasn't free, but was worth every penny.

Escaping from jail

We got caught in the rain after that, and took refuge on the steps of the National Archives.  When it looked like it wouldn't let up, we popped inside to take a look at the Magna Carta, Bill of Rights, Declaration of Independence, and the Constitution.  {Sadly, no pictures were allowed inside.}
Not actually the entrance to the National Archives

POURING!

The rain stopped by the time we got out, and we stopped back at the hotel for a bit to dry off.  Part 2 tomorrow!
