Home Projects

With both girls in school full-time, I have a lot more free time during the day {Skip too when he’s on nights or off!} Most of it is spent working for me, but it’s also given me the opportunity to look around the house and notice little changes here and there I want to make. The first was repainting our bedroom.   I had painted it grey with a darker accent wall a few years ago. Which I loved until we moved the furniture around the accent wall was no longer behind our bed.   In comes an $18 clearance gallon of paint from Lowes. It’ a soft, grayish blue, and I am absolutely in love! So much so that I decided to repaint our bathroom downstairs.   It had been a burnt orange before, which again was fine, but I had the paint and felt like a little upgrade. I’m completely in love with these two rooms now! On the bigger project end, I managed to convince Skip that we needed to rip up all the carpets upstairs in our house RIGHT THEN {I have no patience when it comes to home projec...

Need a little spruce around the house? Check out Cozy Wall Art

Image
If you've ever been to my house before, then you know I have a love of vinyl stickers/quotes.  I have them placed strategically all over the house.  In the kitchen, by the front door, dining room, and in each of the girls rooms.  So when I was contacted by Cozy Wall Art {www. CozyWallArt.com } I literally jumped at the chance to try out one of their vinyls. As I perused their site, I was stuck by two things.  First, they have so many  great vinyls to chose from, I could barely decide what I wanted.  Second of all, they are really reasonably priced.  A lot of vinyls I see these days are super expensive and definitely not in my budget.  This site seems to have vinyls for everyone's budget. Also, orders over $50 ship for free!! I finally decided on the ABC Blocks Full Alphabet Wall Decal.  I loved that I was able to chose not only the size I wanted, but the color as well.  I knew this would be a great addition to the girls' playroom, ...

Wanna Know a Secret?

Something about the impending spring {hopefully, yes, spring really is coming?} makes me itch to do some work around the house.  So the past few days have been filled with trips to Lowes and TJ Maxx, and dozens of things being changed around here.  Every time Skip gets home from work something is different. But one of the favorite projects so far has been replacing my curtains in the bedroom.  We've had these red, plain, boring, really too small for these windows curtains since we first got married.  They worked great at the condo, but just weren't cutting it here.  And after years of just putting up with them, I was finally ready to do something about them. But something you must know about me first, is that I'm one of the cheapest most frugal people you'll meet.  I rarely buy anything at retail value, and am always trying to find a way to do something for less .  But after some marathon shopping and a lot of price comparison, I finally fou...

"Paint It" Kitchen Cabinets

Image
I've very excited to be linking up with Mandy { fabulous name} for today's edition of the Dog Days of Winter... Today's post is "Paint-It" and if you know me, then I had trouble decided which projected of mine I wanted to blog about.  I constantly have a paintbrush in hand and am attacking another room.  In the almost five years we've lived here I've painted every room in the house at least once: Living room - 3 times Play room - 2 times Dining room - 2 times Kitchen - 3 times Nursery - just once Both bathrooms - just once Emmy's room - twice Master bedroom - twice Obviously I change my mind a lot.  This past summer though, I wanted to tackle a little something more difficult .  Something to stretch my painting skills a bit more.  And since re-doing my kitchen countertops worked out so well, I decided to tackle the kitchen cabinets. I did tons of research before hand, and finally settled on using the Rustoleum Cabinet Transformation kit....

The Longest Story Ever Written About a Table

Image
When Skip and I first got married, we bought a tiny little one bedroom condo. Neither of us had moved out of our parents house yet {we were only 22} so we didn't have any furniture to bring to our new place.  We bought a bed right after we closed on the place, and that was all we had for longer than I'd like to admit.  We ate picnics on the floor and shared the two camping chairs we had with friends when they came over.  It was such a fun, special time. One day Skip had to pick up some papers for Shiba at the vet.  When he was done he wandered into this old antique store up the street.  Inside he found a glass and marble dining table and four white chairs to go with it.  He brought me there the next day to show me and see if I liked it.  To be honest?  It really wasn't my style at all, but Skip was so excited about picking it out that I could not say no.  It was a good price as well, and we figured the glass top would help open up the di...

Children's Artwork Organization

Image
Today I'm linking up with these lovely ladies for their Dog Days of Winter. Today's topic is All About Organization, and I have a super simple project for you.  Like most little girls, Emmy loves to color, paint, and create beautiful pictures.  But with a hobby like that, little bits and pieces of paper quickly accumulate everywhere .  Add in the hundreds of pictures and projects she's bringing home from school now, and some days I feel like we'll all get lost under a pile of crayon and construction paper. I wanted to display her {and Charlie's!} lovely creations, and most importantly to keep them from just being shoved in drawers and saver boxes.  I had a big blank space of wall above the chalkboard in the girls playroom that I knew would be perfect.   I purchased 12 black document frames from the Dollar Tree.  I made sure they were document frames, as they are slightly larger that 8x10's and I wouldn't have to cut any paper.  I went through...

Kitchen Cabinet Card Display

Image
My friend K reminded me this morning that I never wrote my post about displaying my Christmas cards on my cabinets.  So here you go!! In past years, I've just taped all my cards up around the door frame leading into the kitchen.  It was nice since I never really ran out of wall space, and friends loved to look around at everyone's cards.  But it just didn't look pretty enough for me.  So this year I obviously took to Pinterest to find a new way.  I wanted something that looked really nice, but also let each card be seen.  Why display them if you can't see each and every one? Displaying them on the cabinets seemed just perfect for me.  It looked great, wasn't too cluttered, and helped bring some Christmas spirit to my sadly neglected kitchen!  I also loved just how easy it was to get this done! Here is what you need to get started: - A roll or two of ribbon {I needed a roll and a half} - Clothes pins {I used regular, some people said they used...
