A Marine Wedding

Thursday night kicked off our weekend of fun.  Skip and I attended the wedding of one of his old Marine Corps buddies.  There were a few other Marines there as well, along with their wives, who were my "battle buddies" when our men were deployed.

It was a great night of eating, drinking, dancing, and reminiscing.  We don't get together all that much these days, but when we do it's like no time has passed.  I love friends that you can just pick up right where you left off.

It's been seven years since the boys got back from Iraq.  At the time, the girls and I were just their girlfriends and finances.  Seven years later we're wives, and mothers.  Our men have all since left the Marines and are all cops or firemen.  We've all moved and are starting to set up our roots in different places.

And as I sat at the table, thinking about all these things, about how far we've all come, I couldn't help but be grateful, thankful.  When I first met my Marine's Girls, our boys had just deployed.  We didn't know when, if, or what condition are boys would be coming home to us in.  We didn't know if we'd get the future we'd all been planning.  We knew of a lot of families whose futures changed in an instant...who knew if we'd be next.

But seven years later I sat at a table with our friends.  All of them.  The boys talking about the good ol' days and the girls discussing how to get our kids to sleep and living with the unpredictable fireman/cop schedules.

I don't know why we were some of the lucky ones whose men came home to us.  But I can tell you one thing, not one of us take it for granted.
Date night!

  1. Thank goodness you girls all had each other to hang on to during those frightening, uncertain days. You all came through it stronger and better for it. Those boys are so blessed to have you - and thankfully, they know it!
